The disaster in parts of Uttarakhand, caused due to flash-floods, has been unprecedented in recent times. The death toll (as reported till now) has been close to thousand and is expected to rise. A massive rescue and relief operation is underway in the region. The PSF extends its deep condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. It expresses its sympathy and solidarity to the lakhs of people affected. The tragedy should also lead to introspection on several fronts, including the nature of developmental process, disaster preparedness and aspects of ‘religious tourism’ in the state.
